A conjugated antibody is linked with the help of a covalent bond (conjugation) to a secondary functional molecul. The secondary antibody's Fab domain binds to the primary antibody's Fc domain. Since the Fc domain is constant within the same animal class, only one type of secondary antibody is required to bind to many types of primary antibodies.
Using secondary conjugated antibodies combine extremely good specificity and high sensitivity with the desired reporting ability. Examples are tracking of cellular events, revealing enzyme function, determining protein biodistribution, imaging specific biomarkers, and delivering drugs to targeted cells.
