Seems to be required in conjunction with HFE to regulate both intestinal iron absorption and iron storage in macrophages. May also have antimicrobial activity. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted. Tissue specificity: Highly expressed in the liver and to a much lesser extent in the heart.
