Sujet: Monensin isolated from Streptomyces cinnamonensis is a polyether ionophore antibiotic. It is able to form pseudomacrocyclic complexes with mono and divalent cations and transport these cations across cellular membranes, hence it's antibiotic properties. In cells monensin blocks the secretion of glycoproteins. Monensin plays an important role as an Na+/H+ antiporter, it blocks intracellular protein transport, and exhibits antibiotic, antimalarial, and other biological activities. Monensin is used extensively in the beef and dairy industry to improve growth rates of cattle.Synonyms: Monensic Acid, Rumensin
