Sujet: Phenobarbital (INN) or phenobarbitone (former BAN) is a barbiturate. It is the most widely used anticonvulsant worldwide and also has sedative and hypnotic properties. Phenobarbital is indicated in the treatment of all types of seizures except absence seizures. Phenobarbital is no less effective at seizure control than more modern drugs such as phenytoin and carbamazepine. It is, however, significantly less well tolerated.
