Background: Small heat shock protein which functions as a molecular chaperone probably maintaining denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. May regulate myocardial angiogenesis implicating KDR. Overexpression mediates cardioprotection and angiogenesis after induced damage. Stabilizes monomeric YWHAZ thereby supporting YWHAZ chaperone-like activity.
