This transcriptional activator shows epithelial-specific expression and plays a role in regulating epithelial cell differentiation and proliferation. EHF may also act as a transcriptional repressor of a specific subset of ETS/AP-1-responsive genes and as a modulator of the nuclear response to mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling cascades. EHF is also a putative tumor suppressor gene and may be involved in carcinogenesis.
