The cohesin complex is important to sister chromatid separation and segregation during mitosis and meiosis and also plays a role in double-strand break repair by homologous recombination. Rad21 has been demonstrated to be cleaved by caspase proteins to trigger sister chromatid separation and during apoptotic signaling.
