Sujet: Background: VPS (vacuolar protein sorting) proteins were originally characterized and studied in the yeast model and found to play a critical role in vesicle-mediated sorting of proteins to lysosome-like vacuoles. The human homolog of the yeast Vps15 protein was identified as a 150 kDa cellular protein that associates with the phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) 3 kinase, Vps34p. Vps15 is a serine/threonine protein kinase that associates in a complex with beclin 1 and plays an important role in autophagy.
