    Sujet

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important acute-phase protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation, primarily triggered by the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). Structurally, CRP is a pentamer composed of five identical subunits, which enables it to bind to phosphocholine on the surfaces of dead or dying cells and certain bacteria. This binding facilitates the activation of the complement system and enhances phagocytosis, playing a crucial role in the innate immune response. Clinically, elevated CRP levels in the blood serve as a non-specific marker of inflammation, making it useful for diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as infections, autoimmune disorders, and inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) tests are also utilized to assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes, by detecting low levels of chronic inflammation. In summary, C-reactive protein is a key indicator of inflammation and immune system activity, widely used in medical diagnostics to evaluate and monitor various inflammatory and infectious conditions.
