- C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important acute-phase protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation, primarily triggered by the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). Structurally, CRP is a pentamer composed of five identical subunits, which enables it to bind to phosphocholine on the surfaces of dead or dying cells and certain bacteria.
