Sujet: Ramon Cajal described small silver-staining organelles in the nuclei of pyramidal neurons, which have been referred to as cajal bodies or coiled bodies. An 80 kDa protein called p80 coilin was identified through its co-localization to coiled bodies. Coilin is a molecular marker of coiled bodies, but can also be found in the nucleoplasm, and may shuttle back and forth between the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm. Studies of GFP-coilin show that coiled bodies can move within the nucleoplasm to and from nucleoli. Other proteins that have been co-localized with coilin to the coiled bodies include cell cycle proteins, snRNPs, U3 snRNA, U7 snRNA, and several nucleolar proteins. Coiled bodies may recruit U7 snRNP and the stem-loop-binding protein to the chromosomal sites of histone gene transcription. Possibly, coilin is important for the formation of coiled bodies that act as sites for preassembly of transcriptosomes, which facilitate gene transcription and RNA processing.
