- Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) is the antigen binding, membrane bound α chain of major histocompatibility complex I (MHC1). While the small β chain is the invariable beta 2 microglobulin, the α chain has three major isoforms (HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C) that are encoding by different loci on chromosome 6 and each of the isoforms has a highly variable region that resembles Fab on immunoglobulin.
