Background: Catestatin is a 21-amino acid peptide that is cleaved from its precursor chromogranin A. As a potent nicotinic cholinergic antagonist, Catestatin inhibits catecholamine release from chromaffin cells and noradrenergic neurons. It also can induce mast cell migration, degranulation and stimulate histamine release. It has been suggested that early deficiency of Catestatin might play a pathogenic role in the subsequent development of the hypertension.

Catestatin also acts on innate immunity, and shows antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
