    Sujet
Autophagy is the process by which endogenous proteins and damaged organelles are destroyed intracellularly.autophagy is postulated to be essential for cell homeostasis and cell remodeling during differentiation, metamorphosis, non-apoptotic cell death, and aging. Reduced levels ofautophagy have been described in some malignant tumors, and a role forautophagy in controlling the unregulated cell growth linked to cancer has been proposed. It may play a role in antiviral host defense. Protects against infection by a neurovirulent strain of Sindbis virus. May play a role inautophagy.
Subcellular location: Cytoplasm. Golgi apparatus membrane, Peripheral membrane protein. Note: Expressed in dendrites and cell bodies of cerebellar Purkinje cells
    Tissue specificity: Ubiquitous Also known as: Beclin-1, BECN1, GT197, ATG6, VPS30, beclin1.
