It is a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and strongly expresses to all leukocytes, epithelial cells, endothelial cells, hepatocytes, mesenchymal cells. CD44 is also called extracellular matrix receptor type III and has functional roles in cell migration, lymphocyte homing and adhesion during hematopoiesis and activation.
