Intracellularly, PBEF acts as a cytosolic enzyme involved in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) synthesis. PBEF levels positively correlate with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus and can bind the insulin receptor to lower blood sugar.
