  1. Nitric oxide generation by cytoglobin nitrite reductase activity is modulated by the oxidation state of surface-exposed cysteines C38 and C83.Cysteine oxidation has no discernible effect on the rate of nitric oxide dioxygenase activity but does influence the rate of penta-to hexa-heme iron coordination following nitrate dissociation.

  3. The results obtained in this study (1) show that plasma-produced reactive oxygen and nitrogen species can extensively oxidize proteins and (2) that the oxidation status of two redox-active cysteines lead to different conformations of CYGB.

  4. Endothelial cells facilitate the ability of smooth muscle cells to metabolize nitric oxide through upregulation of cytoglobin.

Cytoglobin (CYGB) profil antigène

Antigen Summary

This gene encodes a globin protein found in vertebrate cells. The encoded protein is described as a hexacoordinate hemoglobin which binds ligand differently from the pentacoordinate hemoglobins involved in oxygen transport, and may be involved in protection during oxidative stress. This gene is located on chromosome 17 in the same region as a retinal gene which is mutated in progressive rod-cone degeneration, but in the opposite orientation.
